September 17-18, 2008

Weather:  Full sun with shadow present in morning.  Cool with light wind at 10 knots.  Light marine haze present on horizon throughout morning.  Seas calm.  Around 10:15 local a large mass of marine fog rolled in and completely covered the area surrounding FLIP.  Fog persisted for about an hour and a half.  Also, a lot of drifting kelp passing around the instrument in the water.  In the afternoon, lots of sunshine and wind building to 15 knots from west.  Waves also increasing.  DPOL instrument was in FLIP’s shadow by 16:15 local thus sampling was stopped.  Also should be noted that some sky images were taken using DPOL floating on its back in water looking up to the sky.

Instrumentation used:  Sky camera system was run from 14:45 GMT – 15:45 GMT.  Images were taken in cycles that took 1 image with each appropriate spectral filter and polarizer combination.  A typical cycle took about 6 minutes to complete and cycles were started every 15 minutes.  Had lots of trouble with the camera freezing/cutting out.  Tried to fix, saw ERROR 6 on one of the filter wheel control boxes.

DPOL instrument was run from 17:15 GMT – 23:15 GMT sampling upwelling light.  This was accomplished by floating the instrument down current from the ship on the surface of the water.  Images from this instrument were taken in cycles that consisted of 1 image with each spectral filter and then that sequence was looped 5 times.  Cycles took about 12 minutes to complete and cycles were started every 15 minutes corresponding with the sky camera cycles.

Microtops sunphotometers were also taken every 15 minutes corresponding to the previous 2 instruments’ sampling schedule.  The microtops were taken from 14:45 GMT – 15:45 GMT and 19:00 GMT – 23:15 GMT.
