Weather:  Full sun in morning with strong westerly winds around 18 – 20 knots.  Large waves and frequent white caps present.  FLIP tilted again due to current/wind.  A few stray very high cirrus clouds during morning hours.  Wind waves increase throughout day.  Sea surface very volatile; not good conditions for taking upwelling images.  Wind residing a little in the afternoon to around 15 knots by 16:00 local.  By 18:00 local, DPOL in shadow of ship and data collection stopped. 

Instrumentation used:  Sky camera system was run from 17:30 GMT – 17:45 GMT and 19:00 GMT – 01:00 GMT (September 20, 2008).  Images were taken in cycles that took 1 image with each appropriate spectral filter and polarizer combination.  A typical cycle took about 6 minutes to complete and cycles were started every 15 minutes.  Edited the sky camera tableservo/camera programs to prevent the camera from waiting for the table to stop moving before taking an image in case the tableservo cuts out or looses signal like it has been lately.

DPOL instrument was run from 17:00 GMT – 01:00 GMT (September 20, 2008) sampling upwelling light.  This was accomplished by floating the instrument down current from the ship on the surface of the water.  Images from this instrument were taken in cycles that consisted of 1 image with each spectral filter and then that sequence was looped 5 times.  Cycles took about 12 minutes to complete and cycles were started every 15 minutes corresponding with the sky camera cycles.  DPOL was floating near the Polish group’s radiance instrument and several times they came within 1 meter of each other.

Microtops sunphotometers were also taken every 15 minutes corresponding to the previous 2 instruments’ sampling schedule.  The microtops were taken from 17:15 GMT – 00:30 GMT (September 20, 2008).
